When to Use

  • You need to split an oversized model into printable, plate-sized parts.

  • You want to print a multi-color model with less purge waste and fewer filament changes.

  • You want split parts automatically arranged on the build plate for easier printing.

  • You want to preserve fine details and surface quality by reducing overhangs, supports, and the risk of damage during support removal.

  • You want to split, cap, and align model parts without switching between multiple tools.


When NOT to Use

  • You can already print the model cleanly as one piece within your printer's build volume.

  • You need precise cut placement or custom joints, which are better handled manually in Blender or Meshmixer.


Step-by-Step

  1. Select a model from your model library, or generate a new one.

  2. Click Print in the left sidebar to open the 3D Printing workspace, open Meshy Auto Split from either of these entry points:

    • The Meshy Auto Split card at the top of the Post-Processing panel.

    • The Meshy Auto Split button in the toolbar below the model viewer.

  3. Click Meshy Auto Split and wait about 40 seconds. When the split is complete, the model will reappear with each part shown in a different color.

  4. Drag the slider below the model to gradually pull the parts apart. Slide it back to bring the parts together and check how they fit.

  5. Switch between the two view modes:

    • Assembled: Shows the parts fitted together so you can check their alignment.

    • On Plate: Shows the parts arranged flat on the print plate as they will be printed.

  6. Click the list icon on the right side of the toolbar to view all parts, their colors, and the total part count.

  7. Click the Download button at the bottom-right of the toolbar. Choose one of the following export layouts:

    • Assembled: Exports all parts together in their fitted positions.

    • On Plate: Exports the parts arranged on the print plate, ready to import into your slicer without repositioning.

    • STL is the recommended file format.

  8. Click Re-split in the toolbar to generate a different split result if needed. Each re-split starts a new split job and uses credits. It is different from the free Retry option available during model generation.

Tips

  • Models with clear, separable structures usually produce the best results.

  • Character free of excessive small accessories and tangled surface details, multi-part props, landmark miniatures and figurines with distinct bases are ideal candidates.

  • Use caution with models that have windows or openings, dense tangled details such as chains, hair, mesh patterns, or highly abstract shapes.


FAQ

Can the split parts be exported with colors for multi-color printing?
Not yet. Split parts are currently exported without color information, so they can't go straight into multi-color printing for now. Stay tuned, follow Meshy for updates on this.
Why did my model split badly or fail?
Meshy Auto Split works best on models with clear, separable structures, like character figurines with distinct limbs. Models with dense tangled details (chains, hair strands, mesh patterns), or very abstract shapes are harder to split cleanly. Please try Re-split.
How is Meshy Auto Split different from the planar cut tool in my slicer?
A planar cut can only slice the model along a flat plane, leaving straight seams across surfaces. Meshy Auto Split cuts along the model's natural part shapes, so the seams hide in the structure and the assembled result shows far fewer visible gaps.
Can I auto-split a model I made or uploaded elsewhere?
No. Auto Split currently supports untextured draft models generated with Meshy 6 only.
