Auto Split

Split a 3D model into watertight parts that you print separately and assemble, for oversized models, figures, and multi-color prints.

If the model already fits your printer's build volume and prints cleanly in one piece, you don't need to split it. For exact cut positions or custom joints, cut the model by hand in a tool such as Blender or Meshmixer.

Before you begin

  • Split needs a paid plan.

  • You need an untextured model that you generated in Meshy with High Detail and Meshy 6 or Meshy 7.1. Textured, uploaded, and remeshed models can't be split, and neither can Meshy 6 Lite or Smart Topology models.

Split a model

You can split a model when you generate it. In Image to 3D with Meshy 6 or Meshy 7.1, or in Text to 3D with Meshy 6, turn on Split before you click Generate. Split needs Texture turned off and adds 10 credits. The toggle has no settings, so to choose how the model splits, split it after generation instead.

To split a model after generation, follow these steps:

  1. In the left sidebar, click Print.

  2. In the list of your generations, select an untextured model.

  3. Under Post-Processing, click Split.

  4. Select a mode:

    • Custom: The default. Under Split Plan, select By Parts to split the model into structural parts, or By Color to split it by the colors of the reference image. By Color is available only for models generated from an image. Meshy suggests a description of the parts, which you can edit to name up to 10 parts.

    • Auto: Meshy splits the model without a description.

  5. Optional: Turn on Connectors to add a connector at each cut surface. Select Cube or Cylinder, and adjust Size and Height.

  6. Click Split. The panel shows the cost, 10 credits, and the estimated time. Custom takes about 1 minute, and Auto about 10 seconds, or 20 seconds with Connectors on.

When the split finishes, the split result shows each part in a different color.

Check the parts

To check how the parts fit together, do any of the following:

  • Drag the slider in the split toolbar to pull the parts apart, and drag it back to bring them together.

  • Select Assembled to see the parts fitted together, or On Plate to see them laid out flat on the print plate.

  • Click Parts to list every part with its color and number. To hide or show a part, click the eye icon in its row.

  • To try a different split, click Re-split in the toolbar, and then click Re-split in the panel. Meshy splits the original model again and saves the result as another version. Your current parts stay saved, and each re-split costs credits.

Download the parts

To download the parts, follow these steps:

  1. In the split toolbar, select Assembled to export the parts in their fitted positions, or On Plate to export them laid out for printing, ready to import into your slicer without repositioning.

  2. In the viewer toolbar, click Download.

  3. In Download Settings, under Format, select a format:

    • 3MF: Keeps each part separate with its own filament color, up to 16 colors.

    • GLB or OBJ: Keeps each part and its color.

    • STL: Exports one mesh, without separate parts or colors.

  4. Click Download.

To open the parts in a slicer such as Bambu Studio or OrcaSlicer instead, in the Print panel, under Send to Printer, select your slicer. Send to Printer needs a Pro plan or higher.

Example

Tips

  • Models with clear, separable structures give the best results. Good candidates are characters without many small accessories or tangled surface details, multi-part props, landmark miniatures, and figurines with distinct bases.

  • Models with windows or openings, dense tangled details such as chains, hair, or mesh patterns, and highly abstract shapes are harder to split cleanly.

FAQ

Can the split parts be exported with colors for multi-color printing?
Yes. Download the parts as 3MF, and each part gets its own filament slot in its color, up to 16 colors. GLB and OBJ also keep the part colors, and STL exports one mesh without colors. To split the model along the colors of its reference image, set Split Plan to By Color.
Why did my model split badly or fail?
Auto Split works best on models with clear, separable structures, like character figurines with distinct limbs. Models with dense tangled details, such as chains, hair strands, or mesh patterns, and very abstract shapes are harder to split cleanly. Try Re-split, or switch between the Auto and Custom modes.
How is Auto Split different from the planar cut tool in my slicer?
A planar cut slices the model along a flat plane, which leaves straight seams across surfaces. Auto Split cuts along the shapes of the model's parts, so the seams follow the structure and the assembled model shows fewer visible gaps.
Can I auto-split a model I made or uploaded elsewhere?
No. Auto Split works on untextured models generated in Meshy with High Detail and Meshy 6 or Meshy 7.1.
